How it works

Which teams are in the lottery?

The 16 teams that miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs enter the lottery. Their starting order is based on reverse regular-season standings.

How many drawings are there?

There are two drawings: one for the first overall pick and one for the second overall pick.

Can every lottery team pick first?

No. A team can move up only 10 spots, so only teams starting in positions 1 through 11 can win the first overall pick.

How do the lottery balls work?

The drawing uses four-number combinations from 14 balls. Each team is assigned combinations according to its lottery odds.

What happens after the two drawings?

The remaining lottery picks are filled in regular-season reverse order, adjusted for the teams that moved up and any traded pick conditions.
